Why Not Conventional Farming?
Conventional farming is known for its use of harmful pesticides, fertilizers, and hormones. The agrochemicals they use are very harmful to the environment. They can pollute the nearby ecosystems with their harmful pesticides. Runoff spreads the chemicals through streams, soil, and habitats, hurting and polluting organisms and communities all around the farm. The agrochemicals can also contribute to climate change. Also, pesticides and hormones are believed by some to cause health problems. They are also known for mono cropping. Mono cropping is the act of growing a single type of vegetable in the same place for years. This can cause the reduction of nutrients in the soil. Because of this reduction, they are forced to use fertilizers to re-nourish the soil. Another problem with conventional farming is that it will take much more to get to your plate than local farms. It takes an average of 1500 miles for the average American's food to get to their plate. By buying from local farms and markets, that distance can be minimized. Transportation is the largest air polluter in the country, and the transportation of food to its distributors largely contributes to that
